Instacart is adding an AI-powered grocery shopping assistant called Clementine to its platform. The AI assistant can convert conversations, recipes, or grocery lists into a ready-to-buy cart.

According to Instacart, Clementine is designed to help with the hardest parts of shopping, like deciding what to make for dinner, sticking to a budget, or aligning shopping to family needs. The AI grocery shopping assistant is available to Instacart users in the U.S. and Canada.

With 1 in 10 online buyers expected to use AI agents by 2030, the new tool could give Instacart an early advantage.

How Does Instacart’s AI Shopping Assistant Work?

Instacart’s AI grocery assistant converts text prompts, uploaded photos, and past purchases into a fully loaded, ready-to-checkout grocery cart. For instance, the AI assistant can turn a message like, “I need a week of budget-friendly lunches for kids” into a personalized ready-to-buy cart within seconds.

“Every night, millions of families ask the same question: ‘What’s for dinner?’ Not knowing the answer, let alone what to shop for, is one of the most universal human experiences, and a problem Instacart is built to solve. We’ve spent nearly 15 years learning how families shop and eat, and Clementine puts that knowledge to work. It learns from the preferences you share and the way you've shopped on Instacart,” Chris Rogers, CEO of Instacart noted in the company statement.

The company said the shopping experience is based on what’s available in the customer’s preferred store. This means users spend less time figuring out what to take for lunch or dinner, and more time enjoying it. By simplifying grocery shopping with artificial intelligence, Instacart joins companies like Uber Eats and DoorDash, which have already added AI tools to their platforms.

An AI Tool that Uses Natural Language

Like other AI chatbots, Instacart’s grocery assistant, Clementine, understands natural language. For instance, a user can ask it to "make a high-protein easy dinner for two," and it will respond with a recipe featuring a list of items that can be added to the cart with a tap.

Additionally, Clementine can create personalized recipes for users or display options from trusted publishers. The AI-powered shopping assistant can tailor suggestions based on the preferences set by users.

For example, users can ask the AI assistant to limit recommendations to nut-free, vegetarian, or gluten-free recipes. This keeps suggestions aligned to the users’ dietary needs. The grocery shopping tool also identifies relevant deals and recommends more affordable alternatives.

Most importantly, Clementine can help users quickly shop for staple items. For instance, if asked to restock the pantry or shop for usual items, the AI assistant references previous orders and generates a list of items that users can quickly add to carts and purchase.

Why the AI Shopping Assistant Means for Instacart

The rise of AI grocery assistants signals a broader shift in delivery apps. Increasingly, food delivery platforms are helping users plan meals, choose products, and manage shopping. By embedding AI into these experiences, Instacart is positioning itself as the go-to grocery planning platform.
