Microsoft AI CMO leaving comes as the company makes broader changes to its consumer AI strategy. Andra Mallard, who joined Microsoft’s AI unit from Pinterest in January, is stepping back from her chief marketing officer role and plans to relocate her family to Europe. Microsoft said Mallard will remain with the company as an adviser until early next year. The change also comes as Microsoft reorganizes its Copilot marketing and product structure.

Andra Mallard Steps Back From Microsoft AI Role

Mallard joined Microsoft AI after more than seven years as chief marketing officer at Pinterest. Before Pinterest, she held marketing leadership positions at Athleta and Omada Health. In an internal memo, Microsoft executive Yusuf Mehdi said Mallard planned to move her family to Europe in August to be closer to her father, who is unwell. The decision means she will step back from her current position while continuing to support Microsoft in an advisory capacity through early next year.

Mehdi also credited Mallard with bringing a consumer-focused approach to Microsoft Copilot marketing efforts and supporting a more unified product strategy. “I’m grateful for the incredible energy and consumer-centric ethos she’s brought to turbo-charging our Copilot marketing efforts; Andrea has played a key role in advocating for a more unified approach, including the single app experience.” Business Insider reported.

Microsoft Changes Its Copilot Marketing Structure

The departure comes alongside a shift in Microsoft’s approach to consumer marketing. Microsoft is merging its separate consumer and business Copilot applications into a single application, bringing the experiences closer together. Marketing responsibilities for Copilot are being consolidated under Microsoft executive Jared Spataro, and Microsoft AI does not plan to directly replace Mallard’s CMO position.

The changes are part of a broader restructuring within Microsoft AI. In March, Microsoft moved Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman into a new role focused on a superintelligence team and consolidated its commercial and consumer Copilot organizations under new leadership. The restructuring places greater emphasis on a unified Copilot experience and centralized marketing responsibility.

What Mallard Worked On at Microsoft

During her short tenure, Mallard was associated with several consumer-focused marketing initiatives around Copilot. One campaign included a Super Bowl advertisement showing NFL teams using Copilot in Excel to analyze athlete performance and create scouting profiles. Microsoft also worked with influencers including Alix Earle, who featured Copilot in social media content. However, the work on both initiatives had started before Mallard joined Microsoft.

For Microsoft, the leadership change comes at a time when the company is reshaping how Copilot is positioned for consumers and businesses. With marketing responsibilities moving to Spataro and no direct replacement planned for Mallard’s position, the company appears to be simplifying its marketing structure alongside the consolidation of its Copilot applications.
