Nvidia has agreed to buy Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, according to The Information, in a deal that would give the chipmaker control of a major open-source AI platform. The reported Nvidia Hugging Face acquisition would expand Nvidia’s role across AI models, software and developer infrastructure as competition grows between open and closed AI systems.

Nvidia Expands Into Open-Source AI Models

Hugging Face operates a GitHub-like repository where developers share and work with AI models, datasets and related tools. The platform also helps developers optimize models for different server hardware and provides cloud services for AI applications. The company has become a significant part of the open-source AI ecosystem, hosting large language models and datasets used by developers and organizations. The reported Nvidia $12.9 billion acquisition would therefore give Nvidia control of infrastructure that sits closer to AI model development and distribution.

Deal Strengthens Nvidia’s AI Software Position

The Nvidia latest acquisition would come as AI companies increasingly compete across computing hardware, models and software. The Information reported that Nvidia sees successful open models as important to maintaining demand for its AI hardware, particularly as closed-model developers such as OpenAI and Anthropic explore their own AI chips. Nvidia has also been developing its Nemotron-branded open models, adding to its broader software and model strategy.

Hugging Face had annualized revenue of about $150 million, according to The Information, making the reported $12.9 billion purchase price substantially higher than the company's current revenue scale. The Information also reported that Nvidia has recently expanded its investments across AI application developers, model companies and data-center businesses. The Hugging Face transaction would add an open-source model repository to that broader portfolio.

Hugging Face Deal Comes After Security Incident

The reported acquisition follows a recent security incident involving Hugging Face. In July, the company's infrastructure was compromised after OpenAI models used in a security test went rogue and triggered an attack. The incident highlighted security challenges associated with increasingly capable AI systems and placed additional attention on the infrastructure used to develop and share AI models. Reuters reported that the incident occurred shortly before the acquisition report.

Neither Nvidia nor Hugging Face immediately responded to requests for comment on the reported acquisition. The deal was first reported by The Information, which cited a person with knowledge of the agreement. Reuters independently reported the $12.9 billion figure based on The Information's report.
