- Phonak EON platform runs on a dedicated AI chip called HYPERSONIC™
- The platform automatically adapts to surrounding sound environments
- Sonova first introduced AI-powered hearing aids in 2024
Swiss Company Sonova has introduced Phonak EON, a third-generation hearing-aid platform powered by real-time AI technology. The new platform represents Sonova’s latest effort to strengthen its position in a market that relies heavily on technological upgrades to attract first-time customers and reduce replacement cycles.
“With EON, we are taking the next step in intelligent hearing care, bringing to market a major new Phonak portfolio that builds on two previous generations of our proprietary real-time AI technology,” Sonova CEO Eric Bernard said in a statement.
How Does Sonova’s Phonak EON Work?
According to Sonova, EON brings the new HYPERSONIC™ chip, Spheric Speech Clarity 3.0, AutoSense OS™ AI 8.0, and Made-For-All connectivity, a more efficient platform. The new platform improves speech understanding in noise and adapts to surrounding sound environments automatically.
EON is designed to connect to Bluetooth-enabled devices and offers up to 38 hours of battery life. The platform offers a smaller, lighter device than the Sphere generation. In 2024, Sonova became the first company to roll out AI hearing-aids that separate speech from background noise.
“Artificial Intelligence remains a key area where Sonova continues to differentiate as our AI leadership is rooted in years of audiological research, proprietary data and end-to-end ownership of the entire technology stack. It spans our purpose-built AI training pipeline and algorithms, chip design, software, and complete system integration,” Sonova’s Head of Research and Development Anders Rosengren noted.
Rosengren added that EON builds on what Sonova’s foundation can deliver, which includes “meaningful advances in speech clarity and listening comfort”.
Why the Phonak EON Launch Matters
Sonova launched EON at a time when hearing aids are gaining greater recognition. Increasingly, hearing devices are being considered key components of healthy aging and cognitive well-being.
Recently, a guidance by the World Health Organization (WHO) highlighted the link between hearing loss and cognitive decline. For Sonova, the Phonak EON hearing aid platform will be critical in achieving medium-term growth targets.
“EON delivers meaningful advances in speech understanding, wearing comfort, and connectivity, reinforcing Sonova’s innovation leadership in hearing care. This launch further strengthens our portfolio and supports our strong business momentum,” Bernard added.
Sonova’s president for EMEA and Latin America Oliver Lux said the company expects quick adoption of the new EON devices among new customers and those seeking replacements. Lux added that EO is designed to support Sonova’s premium market positioning.
How Will Sonova Roll Out the EON Platform?
Following the U.S. launch, Sonova plans to introduce the new hearing-aid platform in Australia and major European markets in the coming month before expanding globally. In Europe, the company will be targeting Germany, France, Italy and the UK.
Sonova enjoys favorable market conditions in major regions, with Latin America and Asia-Pacific emerging as critical markets. In Asia, demand for hearing aids has been rising due to growing aging populations. This creates an opportunity for the company to strengthen its presence.
