WhatsApp Introduces In-App Bill Payments in India

WhatsApp’s Bill Payments feature has launched in India. The new feature allows users to find, manage, and pay household bills without exiting the messaging app. The Bill Payments feature is powered by the Bharat Connect (BBPS) network. WhatsApp is gradually rolling out its Bill Payments feature across India, with plans to make it available to both Android and iOS users over the coming weeks.

How Does WhatsApp’s Bill Payments Work?

WhatsApp’s Bill Payments feature allows users to make payments via UPI, debit cards, and credit cards. The feature includes a household bills summary, which pre-fetches bills and displays billers who have previously been paid through WhatsApp. 

According to WhatsApp, users can manage multiple accounts under a single biller.. This allows users to manage bills for their home, office, or family members in one place. WhatsApp’s utility bill payment feature also displays popular bill categories on the Payments Home screen automatically. Users can browse the entire list of over 20 categories using the “See All” option. 

The introduction of Bill Payments in India expands WhatsApp’s in-app payments functionality. Already, the messaging app supports metro-ticket bookings, phone recharges, and access to services via government chatbots. 

What Bills Can Users Pay on WhatsApp?

Users can access 22,722 billers across 30 categories on the WhatsApp Bill Payments feature. Some of the bills that users can pay directly from the new  feature are gas, electricity, water, insurance, FASTag, credit card and loan repayments. 

The new feature allows users to view previous payments and upcoming bills. Meta said the goal is to make Bill Payments as effortless to use while making digital transactions convenient for users. 

“For millions of Indians, WhatsApp is already the simplest way to stay close to family and friends, talk to businesses, access citizen services, and buy everything from metro tickets to insurance, all without leaving the app. With Bill payments, we’re bringing that same simplicity to one of the most routine tasks in every household,” Arun Srinivas, Managing Director and Country Head, Meta India said as cited by the Indian Express.

• Open WhatsApp and tap the ₹ icon at the top of the home screen.

• Select the bill category and biller.

• Add and confirm the required account details.

• Review the fetched bill amount.

• Select a payment method: UPI, debit card, or credit card.

• Confirm the payment.

What the Bill Payments Feature Means for WhatsApp

The new Bill Payments feature strengthens WhatsApp’s position in India’s digital transactions market, where it faces strong competition from established platforms such as Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm. 

As the service rolls out across the country, its large biller network and in-app convenience could help drive greater adoption of WhatsApp’s financial services. The move could also help WhatsApp deepen its role in users’ everyday financial activities beyond peer-to-peer payments.
